Dozens of xmas gift ideas to cheer up your language-learning loved ones

Language learning can and should be free, and there are many ways to do it without spending a penny, which I discuss regularly on this site. However, there is one time when spending a bit of bob can certainly be justifiable – when giving in to the consumerist frenzy that we celebrate just after the […]

The month I lost faith in the system, and gained it in humanity

Today, I want to mention one of the most important points in my life, when my destiny changed and my faith in the traditional system of study hard, get a job, work up the ladder, and retire with as much money as possible, was absolutely shattered and I decided to start over from scratch, and why I’m really glad that I did.

Sorry it’s a little long, but I do want to give the full picture so you have the context of how my philosophy on life evolved dramatically in a very short time.

Translation: Frequently Asked Questions for translators (video in French with subtitles)

This video was actually recorded two months ago, just before I left Brussels. I had the chance to finally meet up with Christine Schmit in person – she is the one who translated the Language Hacking Guide to French (here is the sales page in French for “Domptez les langues étrangères”). She is from Luxembourg, but made the trip to spend a few hours with me. You can see more about her on her site Languages and Translation.

As you may already know, I worked as a freelance translator for several years myself too – specifically just for technical documents related to my specialisation of electronic engineering. You can read in detail about my background before getting into it, and how I managed to start my location independent work as a translator.

April Fools’ joke: Benny’s “last video” in Mandarin

Just like last year, on April 1st, I wrote a blog post to celebrate April Fools’ Day with a ridiculous article! While this one was a lot more obvious than the last one, those subscribed to my Youtube channel who didn’t see this post, did genuinely think that I was faking my video as if […]

What’s it like to attend a Star Trek Convention?

Other than for Burning Man, and to generally travel and get to know new cities, I’m mostly in the US to speak at conferences like TEDx and Blogworld over the next month, as well as to attend other ones, so when I saw the official 45th Star Trek convention opportunity between it all, I knew […]

Ask the readers: What is a linguist?

This is something that has been bothering me for some time, so after giving my thoughts on it, I’d love to hear yours. What do you understand it as meaning if someone says that they are a “linguist”? As far as I’m concerned, a linguist is someone who studies linguistics. Linguistics can be a fascinating […]
