QQ is probably the best way. Get yourself a basic grammar reference and theme dictionary to go along with it. QQ is sort of like FB and Twitter and is incredibly popular in China.
The main downside is that it is monitored closely by the authorities, so you want to watch what you say, just in case you're planning on visiting China at some point. But, it has chat options including video chat and you can quickly make friends with people curious about the world outside of China.
