Ciao a tutti.

Right now I'm currenlty learning Italian. I'm having a lot of fun with it and am seeing a lot of results, particularly in reading. It's great to brush over tweets in Italian and not even really read them but still know what they said, all without translating into English first.

But I have a question. I'm going back to school for my last semester at college in a little over a month. I have a friend there who is Brazilian, and part of me wants to learn a bit of Portuguese and surprise him with it when we meet up. I'm not looking to be able to discuss world politics with him, but just a small conversation. I was curious as to what people thought about the idea of learning Italian and Portuguese at the same time. Italian is my main concern, so Portuguese would be on the side. Something like a 85/15 split. I'm just a bit nervous as they are both romance languages and I do not want to confuse the two, although I feel like I have a decent base in Italian, and to me Portuguese doesn't even sound like a romance language to me at times.

Anyway, just wanted to get some peoples thoughts.

Dylan

Hmmm. It all depends on your level in Italian. Io proprio l'ho trovato troppo similare allo spagnolo per imparare entrambe allo stesso tempo – però il portoghese è un pò più lontano dell'italiano che lo spagnolo. Forse varrebbe la pena tentare ;-)

I agree with Tuco, portuguese and spanish are very similar. Although portuguese and italian are both latin languages, they are not that similar to confuse you. I think its worth the try, you are probably gonna make it :)

Ciao,
