Hi, I'm 24yo nursing student and I live in Bristol, UK. English is my native tongue and I can't speak any other languages. I'm looking to learn French to the point where I will be working as a nurse in French speaking countries, seeing as good nursing is massively reliant on effective communication I will need to understand, write, and speak to a high level. I speak no French, and during highschool I was in the bottom set because I never paid attention and had no interest in French, the only plus side of this was that my teachers always said my pronunciation was very good and that I had a knack for being able to read a lot of words how they should be pronounced. Bonus.

Anyway, I was given a PDF of the Language Hacking Guide by a friend who wanted to help me (Benny, if you read this, I promise I'll buy my own just as soon as I'm earning more money, and I'll buy it twice if it helps me to learn French) and I've read parts of it but I'm very much feeling overwhelmed with information and don't really know what to do with it all.

What I need is some deadlines, and I understand that, but I don't know what a realistic deadline is and I need to make them reasonable and achievable. At the minute I'm just kind of floundering about learning a few words here and there, I've taken on board the 'just speak' method, but I kind of feel like I need something else to go on with this. I just simply don't even have enough basic vocabulary to go on and everything I find online to learn is of the 'Which way is the train-station?' ilk of phrase learning that doesn't seem to stick or interest.

Anyone out there able to help?

Thank you.

I have found a book online from 1922 that teaches using the direct method, similar to one of the Esperanto sites that is advised in the book. I don't suppose anyone has come across this or maybe even could have a little flick through it and see if it's valuable. I just thought that using direct method might be preferable, and this sentence in the introduction really made me think that whoever wrote this was on the right path "Speak French, think in French and the language will have a charm which will make the study a real pleasure". Anyway, until I have any better advice or unless this book completely dumbfounds me I'm going to make reading the first few chapters this coming week as my first target. So there wink

Have you read this? You might have seen it already, but since you speak only a non-romance language, it might be of some help. I've never studied Esperanto myself, but Benny says studying it for a mere 2 weeks should greatly improve your language-learning abilities (don't have the link to that post, though).

There are quite a few people starting French in this forum these days (me included)! =)

Yes, I did read that post and have put some thought into it, seeing as my dream to work in Afrique is quite far away as I have to have at least three years clinical experience here first, then I guess I have the time frame and so should do it.

I'm game, let's do this. Esperanto it is.

You have very good opportunity as you live in Bristol, because there is French Language Meetup Group

http://www.meetup.com/Bristol-French-Language-Meetup-Group/

I am a member and I have to say that it had wonderful impact on my French. Once you got basics you should really try to practise and use Benny's way by immersion. You may meet with people of different levels, there are some natives, some very fluent and some beginners like me:)

Native: Polski | Fluent: English Cymraeg | Conversational and learning: Français | Elementary and beginner: LATĪNVM Русский
I learned also a bit: Ελληνική γλώσσα Словѣньскъ Gaeilge I would like to learn: Català Deutsch Lietuvių 官话 Kaszëbsczi jãzëk
Polska strona języka walijskiego

C'est fantastique. As soon as I've got the basics down I shall come along for sure.
