How to get rid of laziness? I would like to know how to get rid of laziness, because sometimes when I learn words in my target language, I become lazy and don't want to finish my goals(like learn 30 words related to everyday life in 30 minutes). Can you give me tips about that?

Is it really laziness? I found that thought that while learning I was being lazy, but after while I changed the way in which I was learning for me that solved the problem.

Ask yourself if you cant keep goals are you setting the right goals, I would struggle to learn 30 words just for the sake of reaching a target. I watch movies or read in target language this way I pick up words and learn them. Some days learn only few words but other times will pick up whole new phrases.

Try differnet learning styles, if still having problems then look at what is motivating you to learn.

I find that motivation is really important here…I tend to get waves of interest and do nothing in between. The best advice I took from benny was turning a "want" into a "need". So change your laptop interface into your target language and struggle until you know it :)

If you're feeling lazy, it's because you haven't given yourself a challenge that captures your imagination.

Learning a language can be a great way to get find that challenge because languages have that mystique of exotic culture, sounds and images and faraway people and places.

But if it remains abstract, you won't get excited and you won't get your butt in gear. So you need to bring immediacy into the picture by…

1) Defining and completing a simple and clear task or mission. Do it today, if possible.

2) Put it out in where people can see it (and tell them about it)

3) Ride the wave of excitement into the next mission

A good example is Benny's suggestion somewhere to do a one minute video in your target language and post it on Youtube. Then post the link on your Facebook and tweet it.

Whatever you do, keep that task small and simple.

If you're like most people, that will be wild and scary enough to make you feel that living in Turkey for three months is a walk in the park.

At the very least you will have people telling you it is cool that you're learning languages -- and/or critising you. Either way, it will be harder to be apathetic or "lazy" about it. You'll either want to polish your skills and get really good or move on to  something totally different.

Either way, you won't be lazy about learning languages any more.

If you find yourself saying, that's no big deal, then do it and post that you did it here.

Maybe you just need to find a different way to learn your 30 words that's more interesting for you. For me, I would find "learn 30 words in 30 minutes" pretty hard to complete if it was something like looking at a list of words and trying to remember them. Here are some suggestions I would give for learning vocab:

- If it's household objects, you could put stickers around the room with the name of the object on it, and say the name every time you use the object. (Before long you won't need the sticker any long.)

- You could try splitting it up--learn 10 words before breakfast, 10 minutes before lunch, 10 before dinner… before you are allowed to eat ;)

- Try to DO something with the words besides just "remember" them. Like, write something (a forum post in the non-English section, maybe?) using all the new words.

- Maybe consider the fact that 30 words a day is too much (unless it's your first week of learning the language when you don't know any words yet). In Anki I cannot manage more than 5 new words per day.

Just think of what you naturally LIKE doing and do it in that language--like if you like reading the news, try to find a site for easy news (news for kids is usually pretty easy) and read that. What do you normally like to do, that you might be able to do in the target language instead?

Hey guys! I can share my way of learning words.

I use lingq.com for spanish podcasts and if I do not know any word, system grabs it for me into the stack which I can learn as flashcards via iPhone app. Certainly this is just the one of possible ways to get a stack of new words.

So what I do next? I use this stack to wake up. I was surprised to find out that I cannot sleep again in the morning when my brain starts to work hard. So I use this new knowledge to study and to wake up :)

So every morning before work I can revise about 50 flashcards. While my activity is too slow… subconscious brain parts work and remember. I am not hard with myself: if the word doesn't want to be remembered, I leave it for a while. It will come in some days. I revise all and remember most.

On reading Kató Lomb's book 'How I Learn Languages', I found a wealth of tips about such things. One I did find interesting though is her mentioning that a lot of people simply disregard the watching of TV or a movie, or listening to the radio as 'learning' the language, perhaps because it is just a fun thing to do, and not so much like 'learning' at all. However if you are losing momentum with your current method of learning, maybe give it a break for a while. Instead of learning words from a list or Anki, or reading a grammar book, or audio lesson, try simply taking a break from the norm and instead just watch a film in the target language, or listen to the radio for a while. It doesn't feel like learning, but it definitely helps! smile After a day or two you may find the hunger to get cracking on your regular things again.
