OK, I'm on to the host to see what the problem is and how to solve it. Everyone is online at once and signing up at once so it's a big load to the server and database. This may happen again on the day I announce it on the blog, but on typical days it should all load fine ;)

But yes, this was another reason to open in waves. I expected the e-mail list to be one of the biggest challenges to the server! Good thing I ironed out a few other problems in advance.

It may be a little slow, but it's certainly still very usable. Just bear with me and don't worry, it won't be like this permanently!

1. Is there a way to implement strikethroughs into the BBcode? This being a language learning forum and all, I think it'd be good for corrections when people are writing in their target language.

2. Is there a way to add "topic tags" to an already-published thread? I'm asking because I posted a thread before realizing that the topic tags exist, and now I want to add some. If not, it's no big deal I guess. I wouldn't have bothered asking about this if I handed already been posting about my first concern.

Thanks! http://www.fluentin3months.com/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif

(I'm loving this forum by the way, especially the focus on missions and exchanges when Unilang and How-To-Learn-Any-Language in my experience tend to get more activity on discussions of metalinguistic knowledge.)

There's no strikethru button on the menu right now, but there's an HTML editor (the last button on the editor), which allows a lot of HTML tags, so you can just click that and then put the <s>tags</s> around the text:

@Duckshirt Thanks! Yes, strikethrough and lots more can be achieved by HTML ;) I can't add it myself as this forum is pre-designed to be a certain way and I don't have control over everything, adding options to the WYSIWYG editor being one of them.

@Saim Allowing people to add tags themselves to already posted articles IS something I can do, but I won't because it is too easy to abuse it since it would be universally editable for all forum posts. I'll add tags myself occasionally if I see something missing, however most of the time try to add them yourself AS you create the topic ;)

probably a bit late now, but I'm having the problem on the iphone screen too, the right side of the screen tends to get cut off and the buttons can be a bit…temperamental, but otherwise the forum is looking good!Smile

Hi

This forum is nice and modern Smile It's great the all the people can have an avatar and that it's many things which are possible and simple to do (in the blue thing over the posts when you write I mean) for example the text's colour etc

I love the forum! Will definitely take some getting used to since the structure is a little different than what I am used to, but it looks really good.Cool

The forum is still a little slow for me, but in general it's a wonderful resource. The little signature flags are especially festive, haha.

Hi Benny ,

Are you willing to expand the intro topic for beginners to include a warning against the spam bot trap related to posting „unprotected“  email addresses in the? (I ask specifically because I noticed a couple of them being displayed in posts, specifically in the language exchange section. Keep in mind that editing is forbidden once a post is replied to, so it’s better to protect one’s email from the start)

And now something totally unrelated:

What is your policy regarding lyrics in the forum? Are full quotes OK? Excerpts? Links? I am not so versed in copyright law, so I don’t know about legal implications.

Can a change be made so that typing :-) or :) automatically inserts the smiley? That would be especially useful from tablets and mobiles etc. as the smilies can't be inserted on the mobile site.

Oh, and x=1, 1.99 or 3.0004. So I'm not a bot. =P

Can't we embed videos to posts?.. I somehow couldn't..

I was trying to embed  a dotsub video I made.. (my first Spanish video!!) .. but had to revert into posting just a link :(

Anybody else faced the same?

@rajith: It wouldn't surprise me if SimplePress wouldn't allow those tags to embed videos.

Then why the rounding error?  Clearly any human would just factor it to (x-1)(x-2)(x-3) Laugh

1. Tested Dotsub myself and I couldn't find anyway to get it to work… it has to be in an iframe, rather than flash like Youtube, but neither directly pasting in its HTML code to the HTML editor, nor using the built-in video entry and using the iframe option, seem to do the trick! I might ask in simple-press support to see what the issue is :)

2. Smileys CAN be written directly, but the code of this forum is not quite :-) , you have to put it between colons. See here for the full list:

So [colon]smile[colon] will give Smile

I can edit this, but it doesn't seem to work for separating things. I'll have to play around with this! However, I know some people prefer actual characters to the symbols so it may be nice to be able to use those when they write them. Might feel weird to have them automatically change! I think it's better as it is, what do you think?

3. OK, I'll edit the "Missions" intro to say not to give your e-mail address. Better to PM! :)

4. Re: Lyrics. I really don't know – are lyrics copyrighted? I've seen lyrics on many sites – I didn't realise they followed any strict rules as the original music would…

I was doing a search on your blog and noticed that lots of forum posts show up towards the top of the results, which is probably not good because as the forum grows it will soon get too cluttered to find what you want on the actual blog… you may want to exclude this directory from the search.

Can you give me example searches? I did a few myself and my blog posts showed up first. They should because my blog posts are older and more likely to have links to them, and Google prefers that..

I'd rather leave the option there – this way if someone asks a question (say "Korean resources") and I never blogged about it, they will find their answer in the forums and still stay on the website :) To me a major benefit of this forum is that it will bring more people to the site and keep people on the site longer, as they'll be more likely to find what they're looking for.

By linking back to my blog as a reply in the forum this immediately counts as a "vote" in Google and will give the resulting link preference. I obviously can't do that all the time, but if I see a forum post take precedence over a blog post, by simply linking to that blog post within the forum I can change the balance.

Good point, there…  I don't remember what I searched anymore but it was something rather general that wasn't a post title but was mentioned in it.

Can I complain here about some forum features? :)

First, private messaging is really hard in mobile version. I had to erase some mails in thread to scroll to the newest for an instance. And authorisation form is jumping like hell.

Second, I'd like to be able to favorite some users to track their posts and to get to know them better. Maybe something like "friend him" feature. I'm getting lost with many nicknames. Yes I could write a PM but what would I write? "Please mail me when you'll make another post at Benny's forum"? :)

1. While there is no e-mail update feature, if you click any person's icon and then "View Topics Member Has Posted To" (or started) you will see what they've written. If you really like a member you can simply bookmark the resulting page and have that as your start page in the forum before going elsewhere :)

I can't add e-mail updates of members as that is a complex feature that would require an update from simple press themselves. You could technically create a Google Alert to search my site and that user name, but those updates wouldn't be immediate or 100% reliable.

2. There is actually a "Buddy List" for contacts :) (not for e-mail updates though), but yes there is an annoying extra step on the mobile version. Just clicking "Send PM" doesn't give a very functional screen, but I found a work around!

I just tested it (on my Android) by scrolling down after clicking "Send PM" and simply typing your username into the user search and adding you to Buddy lists (so I can contact you without having to type your name in future, if conversations were to go on, although you'll notice that I won't personally be using the PM system in the forums as I have a contact-me button on the right that helps me organise my many emails better).

After you were in the Buddy list I could write you the message much easier and tested it fine.

Sorry that it isn't 100% intuitive, but editing the mobile version is very tricky, so as long as it's working as it is I'll have to leave it.

Hope these workarounds help!
