OfflineSo the title of this took me a while to think of and it doesn't represent my question too well but here is what I am asking.
I have taken french class in public high school for two years, I know basic things that they teach in french class, but have forgotten the more advanced things they taught (I use the word advanced very lightly). All I remember from it is answering simple questions, ordering food, numbers, asking simple questions. I find I can read french fairly well (mostly context clues combined with the fairly limited vocabulary I know).
Now the reason I bring up my knowledge in French is I want to learn portuguese (Brasilian) because I have family in Brasil that, unfortunetly I have never actually talked too. Now I don't know if it would be more beneficial to just forget french and start learning portuguese or to try and learn french to a level where I can hold conversations, then start learning portugese.
When I say beneficial I mean what order will make learning portugese the easiest. Getting the hang of one latin based language then moving on to the other or just start focusing on portugese right from the start. Keep in mind the french I know is fairly limited but not entirely useless lol.
Either way I do intend to learn both languages as I have started to get a liking to french after visiting Montreal and Quebec, rather then just taking the class to get 2 years of foreign language for colleges. But portuges is ultimately what I want to learn the most.

OfflineI'd say some basic knowledge of French does help a little with Portuguese. After all, you get to get familiar with how nouns relate with adjectives genderwise, for instance, and at least some vocabulary. I don't think mastering French would make that much of a difference, however, because the similarities between these languages are quite shallow.
The good news is that they're different enough from each other that learning one isn't likely to make you forget the other! =)
