OfflineI have been learning dutch now for a few weeks…right now I'm not sure where to focus my efforts (what kinds of topics), I'm leaving to Belgium in two weeks and would like to focus on vocabluary and phrases that I would actually wind up using in a conversation….I have the "practical" stuff pretty well…I just want to be able to hold a conversation about whatever…for people that have learned a language and travelled to a place where it is spoken what kinds of things did you usually find that you talked with natives about? or wished that you had been better prepared to talk about? Any experiences that people have had would be helpfull….

OfflineTry this site and find some Dutch speakers to help you.

Try to force yourself to memorise vocabs! Do it in a way you feel comfortable instead of frustrated. I'm not a hard-working person myself
.
-The only person that can give you the biggest help is yourself.
Good luck. I hope that helped.![]()

OfflineI have been on there actually…my problem is not having enough to be able to say
……My main concern is that I have limited time, so I cannot ofcourse learn vocab and phrases for every possible topic of conversation that may come up….just trying to narrow it down to just a few, and maybe in the process learn vocab that will allow me to atleast partially participate in a conversation about other topics….I'm not the best conversationalist in english either :p never can think of anything to say….

OfflineHi
Where in Belgium will you be? In Flanders the people have so many regional dialects they give me an headache ![]()
Mostly in Flanders they can speak English, not like here in Wallonia. But I understand that you want to speak Dutch, of course.
I don't know which topics you better learn, sorry. In Belgium, the weather is often discussed, or food and drink, maybe you can practise explain the reason why you're in this country also. And from where you come, and somethings about yourself.
If you have a question about the Dutch language, I will help you. I'm not native, but I know very well Dutch, although I concentrated on the Netherlands' Dutch [little bit different].

OfflineDefinitely learn some words that can be used to describe what you do at school and what your greatest interests are. For example, I'm an art student, so it would be helpful to know how to talk about painting, drawing, sculpture or whatever.
Don't worry though if you get there and have a bit of a hard time understanding a fast-paced conversation between native speakers. It's honestly one of the most challenging listening experiences. Ask people to speak more slowly if you have to.
To prepare further, I'd watch some TV with subtitles in Flemish or Dutch. Just get used to separating out the words and hearing the boundaries between them.

OfflineI have been trying to find some videos with Subtitles in Dutch…but I haven't been able to find any…..I tried watching the movie Zwartboek…but the only subtitles are when they are speaking English or German. Anyone know of any sites where I can find some? I have tried 2bdutch but the search function seems like it doesn't work and I don't think there are very many videos on there
