Hi everyone!

I arrived in Paris on February with one of my goals of learning French till conversational fluency. Until now though I didn't put enough effort to make this goal happen and all I can do is giving directions to tourists and "ca va" conversations. Now is the time to change it!

My MISSION:

Spend 3 days talking with my girlfriend in no other language then French and feel satisfied with the level of communication.

I assume that I can achieve this by reaching the B2 level

Deadline:

End of August

How I am gonna achieve this:

Studying at least 3 hours a day – 2 lessons from my Assimil book, 1 lesson from "Blondynka na językach Francuski" and 15 words at memrise.com

French/Polish lessons and conversations with my girlfriend

Writing rapports here about how am I doing, everyday. If at least once I am not gonna write here about my progress I will clean a bathroom of a person currently living in Paris. If someone of you is living now in Paris, let me know. I am also open for other propositions (-:

Bonne nuit.

Good luck! Your "punishment" for not completing the goal is absolutely hilarious.

Hello,

Your Girlfriend is French ??

If not, it will be difficult for her (and you) to speak in French for 3 days.

Hey, if you don't succeed and you visit Toulouse,

why not come and clean my house :)

I'm joking

Good luck

See you

Because of going to bed late yesterday I woke up late and couldn't learn French before going to work. After my job (19:30 at home) I slacked a bit… and then I was being distracted when my girlfriend came back to our flat. It's hard to stay focused sharing 11 m2 flat for two people.

What I did today:

- lesson 14 and 15 of Assimil course book

- 5 words on memrise

Mental notes:

- Go to bed earlier… well screwed for today

- plan my learning so that either I would do it when I'm alone in flat or go to some other place where I can learn (libraries, Centre Pompidou, …?)

- important things have priority. Learning French is important for me and produces tangible results, browsing web and watching youtube videos isn't.

Tomorrow I don't work so I have no excuses for not achieving my daily learning goals written in the first post.

Thank you both for wishing me luck, fortunately it has rather minuscule role in learning a language and the outcome mostly depends on how hard and smart will I work, but still I wouldn't mind having some on my side smile

My girlfriend is French and we take into account possibility of going into south of France on September, so if I fail to keep this actualizing my progress here I might be obliged to provide that service for you (-:

What I did:

- Assimil lesson 16

- 10 words on memrise

I have to go to some place for 3 hours everyday where other people are not gonna distract me and where I will not have connection to the internet. It seems as if it was smarter to go to bed before midnight and then starting a day with learning French first thing in the morning and being done with it for the day, then learning late…

What I did today:

- Assimil lesson 17

- 5 seeds planted on memrise: sous, dessus, sur, autour, dans

I got angry at course "Introductory French" on memrise, as the words are far from introductory, some I don't know or don't use at all in English and even one I have no idea what it is in my native language, so it doesn't seem like the most efficient to learn this vocabulary. I started "Beginner 3: Spatial description". It has much more useful vocabulary that I don't know yet.

I start to have a headaches, I guess I need to sleep more and earlier…

What I did today:

- learned 12 words on memrise

I go to bed and don't put alarm, I need to rest. Fortunately tomorrow I don't work and I can allow myself for that ;)

What I did:

- just watered and harvested my words on memrise

- I was at a party with French people, but because of my too low level of French yet, it was rather an "input" exercise, like listening to a radio in a language that one doesn't understand ;)

Hello

Hey, it's great to make a party with people that don't speak your native language.

I'd like to do that regularly… :(

The difference with the radio, is that you can participate and improve your skills in speaking.

Je te recommends d'écrir beaucoup! Tu est chanceux d'avoir une copine française ;-)

Writing has helped me a lot – specially in Italian. Even if it's wrong! I'm still on my first steps in French but I try to write in everyone's French-learning logs.

You say French/Polish lessons with your girlfriend. Does that mean you're both learning Polish or that you are Polish and you're teaching your girlfriend?

Bonne chance!

Aie aie aie, for some unknown reason my yesterday's long post is not saved… well in short:

Yesterday I just practiced my old words on memrise.

Fabrice, if you live in or close to a big city you can find some events on Couchsurfing and talk there with people from many different nationalities

Tuco, thanks for your advice. I might start incorporating practicing my writing skills soon. I'm native Polish speaker and my girlfriend is at about B1 level in this language.

Today:

I learned 5 words on memrise.

The mission is not going the right direction. If I'm gonna continue like that there is no chance I'm gonna end up even close to my goal. I want to be serious about it and learn French first thing in the morning in a place where I'm not gonna be distracted (running to a library, Pompidou or a place for looking for a job). If I'm not gonna finish my learning dose for a day in a morning, then I'm gonna spend every free moment for completing my daily goals (no more playing backgammon with computer).

A demain

Fabrice, there is such thing as "Activities" where people are posting different events or meeting possibilities. You can also join a local group, for example "Paris" and scan topics for something interesting happening. In such cities as Paris or even Krakow you can find some meeting/party everyday.

What I did:

- just practiced old words on memrise

I need to start going to bed earlier and learning in the morning… which will not happen tomorrow as it's too late to wake up early enough to study before my job.

I wonder, do you use any special selection for words you learn? For example: food, animals, synonyms of going (running, marching, ambling etc.), adjectives with their antonyms (big – small, hot – cold), words ending on -age, -tion, -nce, verbs taking de; I mean the key to memorise more words in shorter time lies in chunking vocabulary and gathering it into easily resolvable groups. You may sort them by theme, structure or cognates. So if you learn for example the word parler, you might also connect it to parlement, parole, parloir.

Et bonne chance à toi!

I learned also a bit: Ελληνική γλώσσα Словѣньскъ Gaeilge I would like to learn: Català Deutsch Lietuvių 官话 Kaszëbsczi jãzëk
Polska strona języka walijskiego

Today I just practiced old words and learned 1 new word.

Hm… tomorrow in the morning I will not learn as I have some plans and I will be free after 21 to start learning… I wonder where could I learn at that hour where I wouldn't be distracted by others and my own bad habits… I guess I will need to find some bench.

I use already created lists of words on site memrise.com. I started with course "Introductory French" which covers 1000 words, but many words there were totally not useful, so I decided to abandon it. Now I finished list of 36 words from a course "Beginner 3: Spatial description", so currently I'm learning words by themes. The only problem I have with these courses is that when a noun starts with vowel I never know it's gender because it's written like that: l'entree, l'arriere.

  Merci beaucoup!
