Hi everyone, I'm Mariana from Brazil and, as the title say, I'm working to be fluent in six languages by 2017. You're probably asking yourself "Why 2017? Why five years? Why six languages?". I'm glad to answer you. There are a lot of reasons:

- I thought I'd have enough time to learn them without losing my mind;

- By the middle of 2016, I'll be graduating in college. I'm a computer science student, and it's not an easy graduation. It requires a lot of my free time;

- I'll turn 24 years old, a nice age to travel around the world;

- If everything goes right, I'll be starting my second graduation. Computer engineering this time (Yes, the graduations are diferent);

- Six is a nice number. =)

And those are my reasons. Of course I'll take small steps, like the one I'm taking now: Advanced french by the end of this year.

I already speak fluent english (but my writing skills are terrible) and brazilian portuguese. Also advanced spanish, a little bit of french and I know how to fake the accent of portuguese from Portugal.

If possible, I'd like to be reading and speaking russian and japanese also by the end of the year (I like mangas and animes =D)

I'll take even smaller steps, like reading Katakana in one month, Hiragana in another month and Cyrillic in two weeks.

Now, why three languages at the same time? Well, I couldn't chose only one. All those three fascinate me.

I've already tried a lot of aproaches, but I got demotivated everytime. I think that sharing my experiences here will help me a lot. And if someone want to learn Brazilian Portuguese or just want to talk, just contact me. =D

Till next time!

Fluent: English and Brazilian Portuguese; Advanced: Spanish; Learning: Russian, Japanese and French; Also want to learn: Italian, Latim, German and Romanian;

Hey! I think your six languages by 2017 goal is admirably ambitious and very gutsy. Don't be self-conscious about your written English, it's almost perfect. :)

Good luck!

Sorry for the delay. My current mini-goal is to be reading Hiragana in one week. I'll try my best, but if not possible, i'll extend for two weeks. I don't need to understand exactly what is written, but i want to know how every kana sounds like. During this week I'll write the other mini-goals and post here for you guys. =D

Sounds like a great project--I like how your plan is to be able to speak a bunch of languages by the time you graduate and are ready to do some serious travelling! I look forward to seeing your progress :)

Hello Mariana ,

Well , your post is very inspiring . Because i'm gratuating in 4 years  and i'd like to set a goal like yours , so i'll be working on that . For  learning Hiragana and Katakana , i'm sure you can do it in a week , it's not hard at all , the way i was able to learn it well is by using it ,  find simple vocabulary and try to write and write again , Your Visual memory will do the rest and you'll be learning vocabulary as well .

I wish you the best of luck . Ganbatte ne ;) !
