It's kinda scary to write these things in a language that isn't mine or to decide a goal in general. Sure I need to refresh my english, this year I left it to languish in a quiet corner of my brain, especially the write part. But I'll start with norwegian that I actually study to school.
This summer I'll spend two weeks in a norwegian university. They picked me to fill one of only twenty places and – hunf – this stress me. Of course I'm happy, but probably I wasn't the right, more confident and fluent choice. They'll test me at the end of the courses D: My nightmares are full of norwegian professors who say to me "thou art too stupid for our university!", but it's a huge opportunity and I'll do my best to improve my norwegian from now to september 2012, when I will also have a norwegian oral exam, here in Italy. I really want to pass it with a good grade; yeah, grades are just numbers, but also a way to measure my progress.
Just for the lulz: when I was a child everybody I knew can roll their tongues but me. So one day I put myself in front of the mirror and started to practice because, and I quote, "I need to sort out my priorities" xD However, after few months I learned to roll my tongue too – take this, Darwin! But the point is that if I beated a non-rolling gene maybe I can also restore my dignity of foreign languages student :°

As you can see in my signature, I'm an italian girl with a poor command over english. At the moment I'm studying scandinavian languages (above all norwegian) and russian. Feel free to correct me in every language, I won't get upset, or message me if you want to ameliorate your italian. Ha det!

Well done! Norway seems to be really beautiful! What are you going to study over there?

I've just noticed I wrote pretty much everything wrong laugh

La Norvegia sembra essere veramente bella!

I hope it's all covered now ;-)

Now – is there a reason why you chose Norwegian? I always get curious when I hear someone decide to learn an unusual language.

Yes, now it's correct (:

And yes, there are many reasons, but first of all because of Munch's paintings and Ibsen's plays. They're are really the inspiration behind my choice; Norse mythology, norwegian landscapes and the music I listen (that's more danish, but Scandinavian languages are very close to each other) made the rest. It started as a cultural choice, but now I love how it sounds and the fact that norwegian speakers easily understand swedes and danes. I hope one day I'll understand them too.

However, I could ask you the same question about italian.

You're probably in the right track, then. There's this music forum in which I used to be a regular where an American guy asked which of the Scandinavian languages the many Nordic members recommended learning. Their consensus was that Norwegian was more of a 'neutral' language – so to speak – and the most recommended as a step towards both Swedish and Danish. Suedes were far more numerous than Norwegians in that forum – so it was probably a relatively unbiased opinion. =)

As far as I'm concerned, well – my sister moved to Italy 10 years ago. When choosing a third language to learn, Italian seemed particularly useful in my case. I had to put it aside a little bit because French suddenly became my top priority. However, while just trying to keep it I realized I was actually improving it a lot more than in 2009!

I do like Italian a tad bit more than French, though wink.

Hi fishtail! Just wanted to wish you luck in the Norwegian-learning. I'm also learning Norwegian. What are your methods to learn Norwegian? I am working towards a B1 level right now.

Cheers,
CG
