I have been learning French using Rosetta Stone for about a year now and, having come across this site, realised I'd fallen into the classic trap of 'waiting' until I'd reached the 'right level' before trying to speak with people. So I needed to set myself a mission… a goal to aim for…

Conveniently, I have 2 weeks off work at the beginning of September… so I intend to spend one of those in France using only French!

In preparation for this I am going to set myself at least one 'immersion hour' a day. During this time I will continue with Rosetta Stone to help build my vocabulary; seek out and make use of online resources (any recommendations?); and generally speak with as many people as I possibly can!! (if you'd like to do a conversation exchange please get in touch! My Skype username is 'andautumn'… or if you live in or around Cardiff, South Wales, come meet me pour un café!)

This plan is in it's very early stages. I'm not even sure where I'm going to go; whether to camp or stay in youth hostels; whether to drive or use public transport…?! Any suggestions or general encouragement is more than welcome!

Andrew

First of all, I suggest you to join South Wales French Speakers. I myself from time to time go to Bristol to meet with the similar group and it is always very good, as the people are on various levels, so if you tired with speaking with somebody really fluent you may always find somebody just learning and feel more comfortable.

Je vais fréquemment à Cardiff donc je pense que nous pouvons bavarder un peu tôtwink

I learned also a bit: Ελληνική γλώσσα Словѣньскъ Gaeilge I would like to learn: Català Deutsch Lietuvių 官话 Kaszëbsczi jãzëk
Polska strona języka walijskiego

Merci beaucoup!! C'est exactement que je besoin! Je vais rejoindre ce groupe smile Et j'aimerais bavarder (merci pour ce nouveau mot!) un jour… dit moi quand vous êtes en Cardiff.

(Corrections or improvements to any of the above are welcome – I am trying to resist using Google translate!)

I have been trying to figure out my plan for my week in France… does anyone have any experience of 'couch-surfing'? I am as new to travel as I am languages (but I am an enthusiastic learner!!)

I made the same mistake, Andrew. (I attributed it to lack of confidence in my own case). There's a wonderful site called mylanguageexchange.com that has lots of French natives looking to speak to English speakers. I had a couple of worthwhile Skype calls and also developed a long-term pen pal. More on my experiences learning French and other resources at http://thefrenchblog.com .

Good luck!

I used to use mylanguageexchange.com and pretty much quitted when I had to pay a membership just to send a person a message.

What I would recommand is either:

http://penpalparty.com/ (I made a lot of friends here)

http://www.lang-8.com/

http://www.italki.com

PM anyone of them for free and you may just find a long-term Skype partner. But that's just my opinion.

Mais bonne chance !

Merci merci! I will certainly take a look at these sites and let you know how I get on…

Lack of confidence is very much my problem. I am naturally quite a shy person, and struggle to hold a conversation together in English at times… but this is very much my motivation for learning a new language, meeting new people, 'opening up' a bit.

I think another problem to overcome is the fear of making mistakes. This seems to be deeply ingrained in me: in this very forum post I made a mistake in the title (using 'un' instead of 'une') and one of the administrators kindly corrected me. However this played on my mind afterwards, and I was annoyed with myself… so I've been working hard to tell myself not to worry about it so much. Pretty much everything in life you learn from making mistakes, and this is particularly true with learning a language.

Progress so far: I have joined italki and started building up some contacts. I'm thinking of using one of the paid teachers on there… does anyone have any experience of this? Is it a worthwhile thing to do?

Also I have joined South Wales French Speakers and hope to attend their next meeting…

And finally, I have set myself a mini-mission: next week I'm meeting the sister of a good French friend of mine. My French friend has lived in the UK for a while now and speaks good English, but her sister's English is very limited. So my mission is to be able to have a conversation with her and give my friend a break from translating!! As always, any tips and general encouragement are more than welcome…!

Ok so I'm not going to drown you all with excuses – I think you've probably heard them all before (in fact this very post is an excuse not to do some French study ;) ) Let's just say I allowed the excuses to overcome me to the extend I felt too ashamed even to come on this site! Not a good start.

Positives to draw from these last 3 months:

I have been studying consistently, for 2-3 hours everyday. I have broadened my range of study materials, and am alternating between Rosetta Stone, grammar books and reading simplified novels. So I have built the determination to put the TIME and hard work in, however…

Negatives to draw from these last 3 months:

I still haven't gained the confidence to have that all-important first conversation with somebody in French.

So this post is a plea, for somebody patient and understanding to help me take this next step so I can properly begin my language-learning adventure. To this person I will be eternally grateful.

I can be found on Skype (andautumn) or message me here.

Merci! :)

Hi there,

The positives sounds good, don't give yourself a hard time. At least you haven't given up :) and you still seem motivated enough to try.

I understand what you mean about speaking, it's hard, I also stuff from lack of confidence. So right now, I'm trying out http://www.easylanguageexchange.com/ lots of french people on there wanting to have conversations.

See what you think. It's working for me.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

Thankyou for your encouraging words Chayal!

I'm going to make sure I take some time each day to browse this forum and check out suggested sites such as easylanguageexchange.com. My aim is to find somebody and have a skype meeting scheduled for next week. I think it would help me to book a proper lesson on italki, but can't do that until payday next week(!) so that will have to wait. However, I really feel as though I have enough of the basic structure of the language in my mind to have a half-decent conversation, and, whilst being nervous, I am excited about making this next step!

Another thing I have been practising is thinking in French. In my naivety, I hadn't realised what a conscious effort this is, and was making the classic mistake of just sitting back and expecting this to 'happen'. I am wondering whether the Rosetta Stone method contributes to this kind of complacent 'passive' attitude, but I am going to at least see it through until I've finished the course.

Progress so far this week…

Still keeping up the studying, focusing mainly on grammar guides at the moment (rapidly losing interest in Rosetta Stone but don't like to 'give it up' when I'm very near the end!) Have joined easylanguageexchange.com and made friend requests (merci Chayal!)… the problem is bumping in to someone online. I'm very much a morning person and this is when I do most of my studying, so I think I need to try and adapt my routine.

I have also started listening to French Radio London whilst studying, and have changed my browser language to French(!) I'm not sure how much these subtle changes will help, but I now know what a 'nouvel onglet' is!

Haven't had a very successful week. Starting a new job has meant major changes to my routine, so I'm struggling to fit study time around this. I realise I need to be more organised with my time and find study activities I can do when I have time to spare.

I have, however, booked my first italki lesson for this Friday! This gives me something to focus on so I'm going to try and do a lot of preparation beforehand. It would be really helpful to follow this session up with a chat on Skype – if anyone is free Friday afternoon and would like to help me, please get in touch!

I just had my first French lesson on italki!

This is a really big step for me. I have been learning for about a year now and, whilst I have built a fairly good understanding of the language, much of this time has been spent avoiding the one thing thing I needed to do, the reason I am learning in the first place: talk to people!

I was really nervous beforehand (I felt like I do before a job interview!), but my tutor* put me at ease and was patient with my attempts to use French as much as possible. It's a really great feeling to say something in another language and have the other person understand what you are saying. I know that sounds like a simple, obvious thing but it really helped with my confidence. We both reverted to English towards the end, maybe sooner than I needed to, but I'm not going to be too hard on myself: breaking the ice was the challenge I needed to overcome today. This was only a trial, I have a full hour session booked next week.

One major issue I have is that I tended to panic when she was speaking to me. All the while she was talking, all I could hear was my brain "what's she saying?" "I can't understand!", which got in the way of me actually attempting to understand. I don't think this is a general language issue, more of an overall confidence issue. I tend to tell myself I can't do something before actually attempting it.

Next steps: finish Rosetta Stone (I will have completed all 5 levels by the end of this weekend); book one or two lessons a week on italki; and, most importantly, seek out language partners and TALK TALK TALK TALK TALK!!

I have had an excellent week! Had my first proper French lesson on italki… and my first conversation on Skype! Both went pretty well… I can see I have a long way to go, but I am using this to motivate me rather than dishearten me!

I have finished Rosetta Stone and I am actually quite glad of this. I think it is a good (although maybe slow) way of building the basic vocabulary, but I have reached the point now where I need to take control of my learning. I need to recognise the areas where I'm weak and focusing on them. This means I'm currently spending a lot of time memorising word tables!

Another method I've been using (this is a good one for bus journeys) is to write a French noun / verb and doodle a picture of it next to it rather than the English word. This is part of the process of trying to get beyond translating into the realm of understanding. I can't wait to get there.

I have my second italki lesson tomorrow. If anyone wants to chat on Skype, get in touch (my username is 'andautumn')

Whoops, it's been a while since my last update!

Over the last month I've continued my tentative steps speaking French. I have been having weekly lessons on italki, and have had skype conversations with some very patient and understanding language partners. My problem at the moment is maintaining the momentum. I keep frustrating myself by having a difficult but incredibly satisfying conversation on Skype… but then not going on Skype again for another week, by which point I feel like I'm 'back to square one' again.

As for the actual studying of the language, I think I am doing pretty well. I have adopted many of Benny's tips in order to fit language learning around the long and irregular hours I work. I make sure I get a 20 minute siesta everyday (even if it's on the train with headphones!), which enables me to get up at 5 every morning. This way I can ensure that whatever happens in the day I still always get at least an hour and a half of language learning per day. I have also given up caffiene completely which has made a HUGE difference. I sleep better and generally feel a lot more 'regular'. The rest of the day depends on my work schedule. I often I work late into the evening, and this, unfortunately, is my biggest problem. The evenings are the best time for me to get speaking practice which is what I need more than anything right now. I guess I need to really push myself at times when I am free in the evening to ensure that I get this practice time, regardless of how tired I am and how hard a day I have had!
Any spare scraps of time I spend doing Anki flashcards – I have built up a huge collection, based on the imagiers videos I have been working through. I have also been downloading the news in slow french podcasts and listen to these when walking to my local pool (an episode fits the duration of my walk perfectly!) I have also discovered that a colleague of mine is also learning, so we are going to try and meet up regularly to practice.

Overall, I am pleased with my progress. I am by no means aiming for '3 months', but I am aware that I should be setting myself a new challenge in order to have something to aim for. By my next post I will have thought of something… ;)
