When I ask spanish people where they have travelled, they use the verb conocer rather than "ive been to"

they say "ya conozco los estados unidos" etc.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, that's pretty much how I (native) would answer. Saying "yo estube en …" in this context just doesn't sound right.
