Congratulations on your goal. I am more then a bit envious, even though I have no plan of actually getting a certificate for my German skills any time soon.
And your blog is looking great. It definitely gave me a couple of ideas as well as inspiration.
Thanks! I'm happy to have inspired you
Hi TheSeaWolf,
I'm sorry I didn't see your message until now.
Advice for a successful exchange:
- Read every post Benny has ever posted
- Read Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People". It's the best book you'll ever read about making friends.
- I would suggest checking out Benny's Language Hacking Guide! It really helped me organize a plan to becoming fluent in German and passing that G.I. exam.
- Most important: Only speak English one day out of the week. This way you'll learn German quicker.
- Apply to a German/Austrian University.
- Get a job in Germany.
- Apply for a German/Austrian Citizenship.
- Looks good on a resume.
- Looks good for college/university.
- You feel so amazing when you open up the envelope saying "Passed!"

OfflineI second your recommendations.
One further advantage of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" is that it's considered a classic and thus widely available. In other words, you'll find printed, ebook and even audio book versions for a wide range of languages. So it's no deal to get your German ebook and audio book and to import them into Learning with Texts.
And once you're familiar with the contents in one language, reading it in another language will be a lot easier. Since the point of the book is not to create suspense, but to serve as a trigger to start (and hopefully keep) acting differently (I think Carnegie even stresses that he's talking about a new way of life), it's interesting to get back to the book every so often and to review in how far one has been putting the advice into practice lately. It's also worth noting that going through the book repeatedly is exactly one of Carnegie's recommendations.

Lingo, I love every post you make on this forum!
You're so right! That book is a classic. It's definitely not a book you only read one time, but rather multiple times throughout your life. Great idea about reading it in another language. I never thought of that! Also, to upload it to LWT is another genius idea. It's definitely a great way to multitask (learn languages + review HWF&IP).
