Hey guys,

I was wondering, what's the cheapest way to fly from the United States, or Europe to Rio de Janeiro?  Which airports are the cheapest (I'm a college student, so I don't mind a longer flight, if it saves me money)?   Which website/travel agency should I buy the ticket from? What time of the year is the least expensive to go?

Brazil is such a beautiful country, but it's kind of expensive to get to…

If you search on the site http://skyscanner.net you can see some pretty competitive rates if you play around with departure airports, and leave the dates flexible. I wrote about it in more detail here.

Going in the months around Carnaval will be the most expensive. Brazil is such an amazing country that you don't need to be there for Carnaval to experience some incredible things. I've experienced Carnaval twice, but saved money by flying in and out at least a month before/after it.

Cheapest entry points are Rio and Sao Paulo. For a wee bit more you can fly with TAP to the Northeast directly from abroad – it's totally worth it!! Once there you'll save a lot of money anyway since the northeast is cheaper than the south.

The first time I went to Brazil from Europe I got a great cheap flight that was also an open ticket I could change the return date on for free (with enough notice – I tried to give notice and they didn't have any spots unfortunately), for an excellent price from Air France because they had a special ticket for under 26s at the time. Not sure if they run it any more (and I can't take party anyway).
