Here are some great resources for finding German reading material.

Personally I like Zeit.de because the website has a huge variety of topics to choose from. You can read about current news, politics, the economy, movies, music, university, etc… the list goes on! Great news website.

I also like Deutsche Welle, but has less variety compared to Zeit. This website has news, business, sports and culture articles. DW also has audio in Podcast form, but unfortunately no transcripts that I could find.

I hope that helps! smile

If you're interested in politics and looking for advanced material, I'd suggest the official protocols of the Bundestag.

http://www.bundestag.de/Mediathek/index.jsp?instance=m187'view=plenarsitzungen'action=plenarsitzungen'categorie=Plenarsitzung

Here you can type in the name of any topic or politician you're interested in. If you find something you like, you can download the video(+ extract the audio?) and you can find the text version at "Fundstelle im Plenarprotokoll"

Some interesting politicians:

Gregor Gysi (left)

Jürgen Trittin (green)

Renate Künast (green)

Guido Westerwelle (liberal)

Peer Steinbrück (social democrat)

Dr. Karl Lauterbach (social democrat)

Volker Kauder (christian conservative)

Wolfgang Schäuble (christian conservative)

Having lost my first draft of this post due to a browser crash, I'll avoid going as much into detail as planned:

A goldmine of classic texts which now belong to public domain:

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/DE_Hauptseite

http://gutenberg.spiegel.de/

Audio:

http://librivox.org/

A small HQ audio book collection:

http://vorleser.net/

(for instance, see Schiller's "Balladen" http://vorleser.net/html/schiller.html )

And, of course, don't forget to have a look at the extensive link list

http://www.fluentin3months.com/forum/resources-2/german-resources/ with a fine collection of online newspapers among other contemporary sources.

For female learners, I find that some of the easiest websites to understand are those for magazines. While I'm not particularly interested in fashion or celebrity, the language is easier to understand when you know what they're talking about.

So, a few:

http://www.elle.de

http://www.allyoucanread.com/german-womens-magazines/ (this one is for a page that has links to other online magazines)

Currently learning German from magazines, websites, films and my old german textbooks!

I take the liberty of quoting two links Gaius Julius shared in a seperate thread.

Hello to all my German-learning comrades and other esteemed members of this forum!

One of my pen pals (and God bless her), recommended this website:

http://gutenberg.spiegel.de/

It's filled with books translated to German, and some original German novels. Some are complete, but some are not.

Anyway, great resource.

Here is another link she gave me:

http://www.labbe.de/lesekorb/index.asp?themakatid=13

Short stories for children. This site also contains listening material, also designed for children but looks nice.

Anyway, have fun (:

Does anyone anyone know whether zeit.de is a liberal or conservative site?

It's a liberal site and it's readership is usually more social-democratic minted. (2nd part of this answer is just my own impression)
