Here are the resources I consider essential to learn how to speak French.
Where to Start Learning French
I recommend starting out with one of my top language guides:
Why French is Easy – This is my go-to guide for French learners that’s packed to bursting with hacks for learning French faster and speaking French sooner.
Language Hacking French – My French course for beginners published with Teach Yourself, that will get you speaking French from day 1.
More Favourite Courses & Apps to Give Your French a Boost
FrenchPod101 – This is my favourite French audio course. This course is much better value than more famous audio courses, and in my opinion it’s way better!
CoffeeBreak French – This more structured audio course is the favourite of my teacher Lea. They’ll guide you from the absolute basics of French right up to an advanced level, with very encouraging teachers.
HelloTalk – is a smartphone app that connects you with native French speakers for free. You can use it to send text messages and audio clips. After you sign up, message the team with the code “Fi3M” to get the premium features free for three months!
French Speaking Tools: Practice With Native Speakers
Speak from day one is my approach to any new language. I have one tool I recommend for this:
Italki – connects you with native French speakers for spoken practice on Skype. You can pay French tutors for (affordable) one-to-one video lessons, or find a free language exchange partner! This link takes you right to the French tutors on the site.
French Listening and Pronunciation Resources
Mimic Method French – Accent training with Idahosa Ness that’s designed to help you sound more like a native French speaker.
Fluentu French – French videos with English and French subtitles. My favourite feature is the hover dictionary!
French Learning Websites You Must Bookmark Today
You’ll return to these resources again and again in your French study sessions.
Forvo – find out how any French word is pronounced. Just type the word you’re looking for into the search bar in French!
Wordreference – A dictionary with a difference, as all words include a discussion thread about their subtle meanings.
