Hi , i'm a moroccan business student and i  started learning japanese this summer because i love the culture , the country and of course ANIMES !!! and i also thought that it will help me in my career ! SO i have the motivation for this :D !

The thing is that next year we must choose between german and spanish to study during university year !! and i have zero knowledge in both ! Spanish will be so much easier for me to learn because i can speak fench fluently , i study in french !

But german is something i've always wanted to learn . i was wondering if starting german this summer will not affect my japanese learning .

Cordially

Hi Kawtar,

I don't know Japanese, but I'm guessing it is different enough from German that you will not confuse them. I have worked on 2 languages at once (German and Norwegian) and I think it works ok if you are already at an intermediate level in one language before starting the beginner phase of the 2nd language. Since German and Norwegian are quite similar, it would have been easy for me to mix up vocabulary and grammar rules if I was at the "beginner" stage for both at once. I don't know if that would be the case for German and Japanese. My guess is, the biggest negative effect from learning 2 languages at once is that you will have less time (and energy) to dedicate to each one. I think you should try it, and if it is too hard you can put one language on "pause" for a few months :)

I think cangirl is absolutely right. Learning 2 similiar languages at the same time confused me a lot.

I think it's just a matter of time. If I had enough time for 2 languages, I would try it.

Well, at least your situation is the perfect scenario for learning two languages simultaneously: they are completely from each other and one of them should be quite easy for you. My plan in the future is to tackle Spanish and either German or Swedish at the same time as well. If you have enough time, by all means do it! =)

Currently I'm learning French, but in my spare time (when i'm burnt out on French translations and have 15 min to spare)  I'm working on japanese kanji radicals or attempting to read small words in Hebrew. It's not much, but it helps out a ton.
