I don't know the required level, but that is completely opposite to "Mission: impossible". If you are serious, give it 3 months maximum. I don't think the discussion will be hard. But I don't know the requirements there. In other countries the citizenship language requirements are generally quite basic.

Hello everyone!

I found out about Benny's website only this morning and I have been spending the last 5 hours reading it. I stumbled upon it after I decided to look for a way to learn Hungarian. Here is why I decided to learn Hungarian.

I am a Romanian living in Northern Transylvania. In these parts of Romania there is an important Hungarian minority. I was born in South Eastern part of Romania (almost 700 km away from my current location). However I have married a beautiful girl from Northern Transylvania and moved here. She is half Romanian - half Hungarian, being born to a Romanian father and a Hungarian mother (nothing uncommon in these parts). Two years ago the Hungarian government issued a law by which it gave Hungarian citizenship to all persons who can prove that they are descendants of former Hungarian citizens and have a good command of the Hungarian language (basic requirements). My wife qualifies for this citizenship program and I have been trying to convince her to obtain her citizenship for the last two years. Yesterday, I finally convinced her to gather all the necessary papers and she will submit them to the local authorities in a short time. However, the "deal" was that, since I have insisted so much on this Hungarian citizenship issue, I should apply for one myself. Being married with her, who almost certain will become an Hungarian citizen soon, entitles me to apply for this, even if I have no Hungarian origins myself. However, a requirement is to be able to speak at least "some Hungarian".

So here I am. My mission is to learn Hungarian starting from zero (I now know only 20, maybe 30 basic words), and to be able in two years from now to have a discussion with a citizenship officer in order to convince him to give me the Hungarian citizenship. Sounds like "Mission: impossible".

I will keep you updated with the status of my efforts.

Looking forward to some advice and maybe some moral support, too
