Hhehee, here we go. I want to focus on really popular songs from various styles.

This is so the lyrics are really simple and good for someone learning the language.

This will give you a broad view of the Brazilian music environment.

For productivity purposes I'm only adding a link to the lyrics:

Genre: Axé

Artist: Chiclete com Banana

Song: Voa Voa

Comments: Famous songs that usually play the most during Carnaval, however they play all year long.

http://letras.terra.com.br/chiclete-com-banana/65743/

Genre: Sertanejo Universitário

Artist: Michel Teló

Song: Ai se eu te pego

Comments:  Very popular in central states, specially in Sao Paulo.

http://letras.terra.com.br/michel-telo/1930299/

Genre: Pop Rock

Artist: Legião Urbana

Song: Que país é esse

Comments: These are national heros, enough said.

http://letras.terra.com.br/legiao-urbana/46973/

Genre: Sertanejo Raiz

Artist: Tião Carreiro e Pardinho

Song: Amargurado

Comments: These represent the folk songs from the old days

http://letras.terra.com.br/tiao-carreiro-e-pardinho/48896/

Genre: Samba

Artist: Zeca Pagodinho

Song: Deixa a vida me levar

Comments: This song is soo upbeat and has a wonderful message and still it's very popular :)

http://letras.terra.com.br/zeca-pagodinho/49398/

Genre: MPB (Música popular brasileira)

Artist: Djavan

Song: Se

Comments: Djavan is very popular amongst bar artists. I dare you to figure what the lyrics mean ]:)

Genre: RAP

Artist: Gabriel o Pensador

Song: Até quando

Comments: Fantastic lyrics

Genre: Funk

Artist: Tropa de Elite

Song: Rap das Armas

Comments: This is full of slangs, beginner will suffer understanding. This is very popular specially in Rio. It's hated for some people for the same reason HipHop is hated in US.

http://letras.terra.com.br/tropa-de-elite/1104052/

Genre: Metal Alternativo

Artist: Tihuana

Song: Tropa de Elite

Comments: This is also full of slangs, beginner will suffer understanding. Theme song for the movie Elite Squad

http://letras.terra.com.br/tihuana/48914/

Genre: Reggae

Artist: Cidade Negra

Song: Pensamento

Comments: Nice lyrics

http://letras.terra.com.br/cidade-negra/45286/

Genre: Forró

Artist: Falamansa

Song: Xote da alegria

Comments: This dance style is very popular everywhere. Forró actually means FOR ALL, that everyone can dance.

http://letras.terra.com.br/falamansa/14353/

Genre: Surf

Artist: Armandinho

Song: Semente

Comments: Brazilian Jack Johnson hahaha.

flaviopezzini:

Forró is not popular everywhere. It might be popular in SP city, but in SP state it isn't THAT popular. In the southern states too.

Sertanejo de Raiz (ou música de raiz, moda de viola…) might be old, but it isn't dead. It's an important part of the Caipira culture in Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and north of Paraná (:

Oh well, I have to make my contribution. I will show you some popular rock bands/songs

Genre: Rock (?)

Artist: Mamonas Assassinas

Song: Pelados em Santos

Comments: They were very popular in the 90's. Possibly national heroes now too haha. Full of slangs and 'fun' lyrics.

http://letras.terra.com.br/mamonas-assassinas/24140/

Genre: Pop Rock (?)

Artist: Kid Abelha

Song: Lágrimas e chuva

Comments: That woman is a myth. This song is so beautiful (:

http://letras.terra.com.br/kid-abelha/46807/

Genre: Pop Rock

Artist: CPM22

Song: Um minuto para o fim do mundo

Comments: It was very popular among teenagers a few years ago.

http://letras.terra.com.br/cpm-22/127044/

Genre: Pop Rock

Artist: Pitty

Song: Equalize

Comments: I found a video with english lyrics. There are several mistakes though. This song was also very popular a few years ago.

Genre: Pop Rock

Artist: Titãs

Song: Epitáfio

Comments: Titãs is a very popular band. This song is very very popular (:

Sertanejo and Forró are very popular in Goiás and Brasília too (that's probably one of the reasons why I hate both styles so much).

I have learned a bit of Brazilian trough Pitty songs :) I love her!

I also listened to Charlie Brown Jr. (alternative rock with some elements of rap) and Vanessa Da Mata (which has become a bit famous here in Italy for the song she made with Ben Harper "Boa Sorte/Good luck").

I'm thinking about getting back to learn Portoguese...thanks for the musical tips :)

If you like Vanessa da Mata, you'll probably enjoy Ana Carolina as well. She's got a beautiful, powerful voice and sings very clearly.

Ana Carolina is great, as well as Seu Jorge and Sergio Mendes. Brazilian music has such a variety to offer in all of its genres.

If you're feeling crazy you can always listen to some Brazilian funk, just not sure what language tips you will pick up from the lyrics:)

Two more songs.

http://www.youtube.com/embed/KnYRQowDrWg

Genre: Rock

Artist: Raul Seixas

Song: Eu Sou Egoísta

http://www.youtube.com/embed/MqQq_ykY_j0

Genre: MPB (Música Popular Brasileira)

Artist: Raul Seixas

Song: Eu Também Vou Reclamar

Comments: Raul Seixas was one of the most important Rock singers in Brazil. He challenged the dictatorship period with their musics, and inspired millions (until today) to think outside the box. Raul died in 1989.

Forgive me for my possible mistakes :)

Wow, that list has nearly everything that I hate about Brazilian mainstream music. It's a gruesome mix of poor musical taste  and zero lyrical content.
