Learning Chinese characters is probably the most daunting task I've ever set myself to. Unfortunately, because it's the only way I have of communicating when I'm traveling in China, I've had to start learning some of the more common ones.

The good news though like Benny says countless times in his book, it's best to keep a positive Attitude. To that end I've found Chinese Characters: Learn & Remember 2,178 Characters and Their Meanings by Dr. Alan Hoenig to be just the thing. It's structured from simplest to most complex and ignores the typical ordering by frequency. AFAICT all of the characters are high frequency and each comes with a recommended story to help remember them by.

I've just started with it, but I'm remembering most of the characters I've covered and if you go to the website, there are free flashcards and samples available. http://www.ezchinesey.com

I'm a bit surprised that nobody has linked it before as it seems to be the best way of learning those characters.

this might be helpfull too.

if you go to the dictionairy(left side, 2nd tab), you can find 17 levels.

the first levels are the easiest characters

一 中 二 八 (yi1 zhong1 er4 ba1)

and the bottom ones are the hardest

丳 龚 戡 齄 (chan3 gong1 kan1 zha1)

it also shows the stroke order for writing these characters
