Gemelo - website for chatting to random strangers in your target language | Resources for speaking | Forum

Hey
Here is a website that tries to bring together people learning the same language for a quick practice chat. It's heavily inspired by Omegle but with the goal to support multiple languages instead of just English. The idea is you can chat to someone quickly and anonymously to practice the language and maybe meet some new people. There's no need to sign up or enter any details, just pick your target language and press the chat button to start talking to a stranger.
The site is completely free and the software is available as open source. It has only just been launched so it may still have some teething issues. It currently only supports English, French and Esperanto but if anyone wants to help translate it to more languages, the help would be much appreciated! Any feedback or help to make it look less ugly would also be great.
Thanks
Haha, I was actually searching for Omegle in other languages yesterday! I haven't tried any of them so they could be inactive or something, but these are the Omegle/Chatroulette alternatives I found:
Arabic: http://chatrandom.com/ar/
Chinese: http://chatrandom.com/ch/
Dutch: http://www.one2chat.nl/
German: http://de.jaleco.com/, http://chatrandom.com/de/, http://bazoocam.org/de/
French: http://bazoocam.org/, http://www.roulettechat.fr/, http://fr.jaleco.com/, http://chatrandom.com/fr/
Italian: http://it.jaleco.com/, http://bazoocam.org/it/, http://chatrandom.com/it/, http://www.quierochat.com/chatroulette/?it
Korean: http://ranchat.com/
Portuguese: http://bazoocam.org/pt/, http://www.chatrouletteportugal.com/, http://chatrandom.com/pt/, http://chatroulettebrasil.com/
Russian: http://chatrandom.com/ru/
Spanish: http://tipitty.com/, http://bazoocam.org/es/, http://chatrandom.com/es/, http://www.quierochat.com/chatroulette/
Turkish: http://chatrandom.com/tr/
(I ended up looking for a lot more sites just for this post.. this took a long time xD)
Oh cool, thanks for taking the time to make the list! I've tried roulettechat.fr before but I'd definitely like to give the others a go too. I think the trouble with these sites though is the conversations are usually a bit sleazy so I was hoping a site specifically aimed for language learning might be a bit friendlier. It's not much use unless a lot of people start using it though I guess.
Ah right, I didn't even think of that. Personally I can deal with dirty talk and nudity on cam, but I understand that's a major reason why people don't want to use Chatroulette. But on a language learning site, wouldn't the problem be that you would be far more like to be connected to someone who learns the language than to a native speaker? This could be a good thing, but in most cases people are probably looking for practice with a native speaker. But yeah, I agree it would be nice if the conversations were a little friendlier…

Oh man, this is awesome! Thank you so much! I went to the Dutch alternative and I think it just automatically connected me to someone… I got cold feet and clicked out. For now. But I will return for sure.
Ha, that is cool, I have been wondering if/where all the foreign-language alternatives for Omegle are. I'm on the Dutch one right now, but I probably picked a bad time (2 am NL time)… hardly anyone's coming on and people constantly disconnect before saying anything…
I wonder if there are spambots roaming it, or if people just leave the window open on 'auto' without paying attention.
bpeel: Cool, are you developing that site yourself?

OfflineListen to the one minute segment of my interview with Moses McCormick for how to get around this issue:
On Omegle I always disconnect when the first thing someone asks is "asl" or "m or f", I don't want to talk to someone who cares about that. It used to work, but now everyone starts the conversation with that, so I think I won't do that when I use it in a different language.

Personally, I find it's a Catch-22. If you say "m", they don't want to talk to you. If you say "f", they'll take off their pants. Neither is desirable.
