Here are the resources I consider essential to learn how to speak Japanese.
FAVOURITE GUIDES & COURSES TO GIVE YOUR JAPANESE A BOOST
Master Japanese – Step by step how to learn Japanese. This epic guide is by far the most comprehensive book I’ve seen on learning Japanese. It’s written by John Fotheringham, a passionate, hard-core Japanese learner, and you can feel it in every page.
JapanesePod101 – This is my favourite Japanese audio course. This course is much better value than more famous audio courses, and in my opinion it’s way better!
JAPANESE APPS AND WRITING TOOLS
Skritter – Learn to write Japanese characters. You can use this app to improve your kanji in a gorgeous interface. All characters are presented to you in a spaced repetition system.
HelloTalk – is a smartphone app that connects you with native Japanese speakers for free. You can use it to send text messages and audio clips. After you sign up, message the team with the code “Fi3M” to get the premium features free for three months!
JAPANESE SPEAKING TOOLS: PRACTICE WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS
Speak from day one is my approach to any new language. I have one tool I recommend for this:
Italki – connects you with native Japanese speakers for spoken practice on Skype. You can pay Japanese tutors for (affordable) one-to-one video lessons, or find a free language exchange partner! This link takes you right to the Japanese tutors on the site. Try out my teacher, Yuri!
JAPANESE LISTENING AND PRONUNCIATION RESOURCES
Mimic Method Japanese – Accent training with Idahosa Ness that’s designed to help you sound more like a native Japanese speaker.
Fluentu Japanese – Japanese videos with English and Japanese subtitles. My favourite feature is the hover dictionary!
JAPANESE LEARNING WEBSITES YOU MUST BOOKMARK TODAY
You’ll return to these resources again and again in your Japanese study sessions.
Forvo – find out how any Japanese word is pronounced. Just type the word you’re looking for into the search bar in Japanese!
Jisho Dictionary – A powerful Japanese-English dictionary that gives sample sentences as well as both kanji and kana translations.
