Here are the resources I consider essential to learn how to speak Dutch.
FAVOURITE COURSES & APPS TO GIVE YOUR DUTCH A BOOST
DutchPod101 – This is my favourite Dutch audio course. This course is much better value than more famous audio courses, and in my opinion it’s way better!
Glossika – Learn through sentences and repetition. Glossika uses the “mass sentence method” combined with an advanced spaced repetition system to teach you Dutch in context. Best for upper-beginner to intermediate learners.
HelloTalk – is a smartphone app that connects you with native Dutch speakers for free. You can use it to send text messages and audio clips. After you sign up, message the team with the code “Fi3M” to get the premium features free for three months!
DUTCH SPEAKING TOOLS: PRACTICE WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS
Speak from day one is my approach to any new language. I have one tool I recommend for this:
Italki – connects you with native Dutch speakers for spoken practice on Skype. You can pay Dutch tutors for (affordable) one-to-one video lessons, or find a free language exchange partner! This link takes you right to the Dutch tutors on the site.
DUTCH TEXT COURSES AND BOOKS
These are the two course books I used when I was learning Dutch:
Colloquial Dutch: Beginner's Course – This series is a great way to introduce yourself to the natural flow of Dutch, without worrying too much about the grammar.
Assimil Dutch – A beginner’s text-based course with audio, if you’re more of a textbook person. Assimil’s explanations are a bit on the technical side, though. If you like that, this is a great course. If you prefer more down-to-earth explanations, DutchPod101 (above) will be a better fit.
DUTCH LEARNING WEBSITES YOU MUST BOOKMARK TODAY
You’ll return to these resources again and again in your Dutch study sessions.
Forvo – find out how any Dutch word is pronounced. Just type the word you’re looking for into the search bar in Dutch!
VanDale Dictionary – Simply the best online Dutch dictionary. Available both as a monolingual or bilingual dictionary.
