Here are the resources I consider essential to learn how to speak Tagalog.
FAVOURITE COURSES & APPS TO GIVE YOUR TAGALOG A BOOST
FilipinoPod101 – This is my favourite Filipino/Tagalog audio course. This course is much better value than more famous audio courses, and in my opinion it’s more effective too!
TAGALOG SPEAKING TOOLS: PRACTICE WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS
Speak from day one is my approach to any new language. I have one tool I recommend for this:
Italki – connects you with native Tagalog speakers for spoken practice on Skype. You can pay Tagalog tutors for (affordable) one-to-one video lessons, or find a free language exchange partner! This link takes you right to the Tagalog tutors on the site.
TAGALOG TEXT-BASED COURSES AND BOOKS
I asked the Fluent in 3 Months team about their favourite Tagalog courses, and here are the books they recommended:
Colloquial Filipino: Beginner's Course – This series is a great way to introduce yourself to the natural flow of Tagalog, without worrying too much about grammar.
Teach Yourself: Complete Filipino (Tagalog) – This course book is an easy-going introduction to the Filipino language. It uses relevant examples while slowly introducing essential grammar.
TAGALOG LEARNING WEBSITES YOU MUST BOOKMARK TODAY
You’ll return to these resources again and again in your Tagalog study sessions.
Forvo – find out how any Tagalog word is pronounced. Just type the word you’re looking for into the search bar in Tagalog!
