Free course lists can be frustrating when “free” turns out to mean a short trial. The resources below fall into two groups: fully free lesson libraries and freemium services with enough free material to try before you pay. I’ll point out which is which.

Innovative Language: EnglishClass101

EnglishClass101 is a freemium service with audio and video lessons from beginner to advanced. A free account gives you material to test the teaching style; paid plans include access to more of the lesson library and study tools.

USA Learns

USA Learns offers free courses for adult learners at beginner and intermediate levels. Its activities cover speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, writing and grammar.

Some courses use everyday life in the United States as their setting. That makes USA Learns particularly useful if you live in the US or plan to move there, but the core English practice is useful elsewhere too.

British Council LearnEnglish

The British Council’s free LearnEnglish library is organised by skill and CEFR level. It includes listening, reading, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary and business-English practice.

This is a good choice when you know your approximate level and want targeted practice. The site also sells courses, but its free-resource section is substantial and clearly separated.

Free English Language Lessons Online: Speaking Lessons

Studying English can prepare you for a conversation, but you also need to practise producing the language yourself. Start small: say a few sentences aloud, record yourself or arrange a short exchange.

Speak in a Week

Speak in a Week is Fi3M’s free seven-day email course. It gives you a short task each day, with the goal of helping you start speaking your target language in front of another person.

It works with English as well as other languages. Treat it as a speaking plan alongside one of the lesson libraries on this page, rather than as a complete English course.

Free English Language Lessons Online: Video Lessons

Video gives you facial expressions and context as well as sound. That can make new vocabulary and conversational phrases easier to follow than audio alone.

Learn English with Let’s Talk

Learn English with Let’s Talk is a free YouTube channel with lessons on everyday speaking, grammar, vocabulary, idioms, pronunciation and workplace English.

Use the channel search to choose one topic you need now. A specific lesson on job interviews or a difficult sound will usually be more useful than watching the newest upload at random.

English Lessons by EngVid

EngVid has a large free library of lessons from several experienced teachers. You can filter it by beginner, intermediate or advanced level, then narrow the results by topic and teacher.

Try the same topic with two teachers and continue with the one whose explanations are easiest for you to follow. EngVid covers grammar, pronunciation, speaking, writing, vocabulary and exam preparation.

Sesame Street

Sesame Street’s official YouTube channel is a bonus rather than a structured English course. Its clips are made for young children, with songs, stories and repeated language supported by strong visual context.

That can suit families learning together or beginners who enjoy children’s programmes. Adult learners who find the material too simple should move straight to Let’s Talk or EngVid.

Free English Language Lessons Online: Audio Lessons

Audio lessons are easy to fit into a walk, commute or break. For active practice, pause after a short line, repeat it aloud and then listen again.

Innovative Language: EnglishClass101

EnglishClass101 appears twice here for a reason: many of its lessons work well as audio, while the notes let you check the dialogue afterwards. Remember that it is freemium, so the free account does not include every feature or lesson.

Speak English with ESLPod.com

Speak English with ESLPod.com currently releases one free lesson each week, with further lessons for paid subscribers. It is aimed mainly at intermediate and advanced learners of American English.

A typical lesson introduces a dialogue, explains important vocabulary and phrases, and returns to the dialogue at normal speed. Start with a free episode before deciding whether the pace and format suit you.

VOA Learning English

VOA Learning English provides free American English lessons for beginning, intermediate and advanced learners. Its site includes levelled courses, news-based texts, podcasts and captioned videos.

Choose a level before choosing a topic. The beginner courses are more structured, while the intermediate and advanced sections let you learn through news, grammar, culture and everyday expressions.

Free English Language Lessons Online: Reading and Writing Lessons

Unstructured websites can overwhelm a beginner. The resources below give you a task, passage or prompt, so you know what to do with the English in front of you.

Duolingo

Duolingo’s course picker offers English from many interface languages. Course availability changes, so check the live picker rather than relying on a fixed language list.

The course content is free, with paid plans available for extra features. Duolingo is useful for regular vocabulary, sentence and listening practice, but add real conversation if speaking is your goal. Our Duolingo review explains that limitation in more detail.

ReadTheory

ReadTheory gives students reading passages followed by comprehension questions. Its adaptive system changes the difficulty to match performance, and a learner account is free.

This is useful when you want short, measurable reading practice. It is designed primarily for students and teachers, so adult learners should decide whether the school-style format appeals to them.

English for Everyone Writing Practice Worksheets

English for Everyone has free printable writing worksheets. The prompts cover story completion, personal experience, letters and persuasive writing.

The worksheets give you something concrete to write about, but they do not provide personalised correction. For feedback, bring a short piece to a tutor or exchange partner and use our language exchange guide to plan the session.

How to Choose One Free English Course

A simple way to avoid collecting resources and leaving them untouched is to choose three things:

• One core course, such as USA Learns or British Council LearnEnglish
• One source of regular input, such as VOA Learning English, EngVid or ESLPod
• One speaking habit, such as Speak in a Week or a language exchange

Complete one lesson today, then use one useful phrase from it aloud. That will do more for your English than opening all 12 resources and finishing none of them.
